Previous Versions

Elaine's notes on the design choices:

  • Computing as a Commodity. I think this brings to life what the author was looking for. I added the dollar signs to make the idea of commodity clear – let me know if it distracts from the content of the paper. Later versions: This collage-style slide shows a range of people in a various of locales using their computers for a range of needs. I attached a few design versions (one option uses screenshots of websites that more explicitly illustrate some of the services described in the nugget).

  • The P vs. NP Question. It seemed to me that the least ambiguous way to represent the idea of "creativity" (especially as something which is difficult to automate) was to use the painter's easel and tools. A music composer might seem to work as well, but it may be hard to get the idea of creation (vs. musicianship) across as easily. [2nd version] follows the suggestion showing both creativity and the appreciation of a good solution.

  • Universal Heuristics. Again, I was surprised to find no imagery of real yogis in meditation. What I found instead were a great number of travel photos of tibetan monks as well as a lot of young, lithe, good looking people doing yoga in various locations. What I like about this one is that the man's back is to the camera, suggesting that whatever is going on, we're not quite certain what it is. I added a glaze of blur for a tint of mystery.

  • The Best of Both Worlds: Achieving Privacy and Utility. This one is tricky, with so much to get across. This image of a fingerprint (which has been blown up and printed for examination) being shredded may convey the main gist of the idea. [Second version] is a pattern of social security cards being cut into strips.

Comments

  • I think the use of art to represent the P vs NP nugget is brilliant!!! Everyone is familiar with the idea that a good painting is significantly harder to create than to recognize and the question of if this isn't the case (like with modern art that looks easy to create) is it even still art? What a great choice of analogy! -- KYR

  • I don't think the image for the "Best of Both Worlds" nugget conveys the issues as well as another image could. Fingerprints say "criminal justice" too much to me and criminals' fingerprints are things many people want on file for everyone to access easily in any context. Therefore, I think this image conveys the wrong sentiment here.

I'm envisioning something like a visual representation of the first paragraph of this nugget. We could have a composite image, like we did for Life Critical System Verification. In one corner, have a credit card being swiped, and in another corner, have a person chatting on a cell phone, and in another corner have a public camera flashing (like one in front of a store or atm or at a traffic light), and in the forth corner, have a doctor handing a patient an x-ray. Then there can be some kind of stream with 0's and 1's flowing from the credit card machine, the cell phone, the camera, and the x-ray all into the middle where they swirl around together. We could have a person at a computer in the middle of this central swirl and he's hitting a key and there's a big question mark on the computer screen. And the viewer of this image thinks "oh no! what information is this guy going to be able to get?" Is that too elaborate? I think that would instantly convey the question being asked here. What does everyone else think? -- KYR

  • Universal Heuristics. Yogi, while humorous (reflecting claimed rather than actually existing spiritual powers), could work only if sufficiently fantasy-looking. It should seem that his spiritual efforts could destroy worlds, not just improve his blood-flow :-). I imagine him old and weird, not a sexy teen. It could be a cartoon, not just a real photo. -Leonid.

  • Universal Heuristics. Thanks, Elaine! Comments for the new version: I would prefer this to be a purely mental action, with no stuff or other implements. It should be clear that his great power is all in his mind. He should have a look of being deep in thought. -Leonid.
